Four Things I 🖤 – 26th June 2018 | Gratitude Journal

⊱ཞ🖤 Sauti Sol & Nyashinskis’ Short N Sweet ཞ⊰

I know I’m really late to the party so please excuse me but I just discovered Sauti Sols’ Short N Sweet song (my poor highschool teacher Mr. Mbatia, if only he could read this he’d be like ‘she had so much potential… now look at her she can’t tell which apostrophe placement denotes possession!’ is it Sol’s or Sols’!?… Sols’) Apostrophes aside I was giving a cooking class this past Friday (ululations!) My beef biriyani post garnered a lot of interest and I gave a one on one class on how to make biriyani … (I am half Pokomo – a Tribe from the Kenyan Coastal Region and I feel like my Biriyani more than makes up for my lack of a Swahili accent!) anyway I digress back to my discovery of the New Sauti Sol single … I discovered it during the cooking class, my little Zizwhizz had a playdate with her friend J, and they were on YouTube and had my phone plugged into the speakers having a dance party when it came on and It’s been on replay since then!!! Sauti Sol are a Kenyan Afro-pop band and they are all kinds of Kenyan eye candy talented! Check out the Short N Sweet Video on their YouTube Chanel.

⊱ཞ🖤 Embody Accessories Feature  ཞ⊰

Last week was uber exciting for me Embody Accessories (a brand I LOOOOOOOVE) featured me as a woman who embodies greatness! I was beyond chaffed when Evlyn the founder and Lead Designer of the brand reached out to interview me. If you’d like to see the full feature head on over to their instagram page!

4 things I love 26th June 2018-8

My love affair with  Embody Accessories started back in 2016 while I was planning my wedding… I spotted the brass T-bar earrings on a newspaper article, a Kenyan musician called Wahu was wearing them. I stalked her instagram page where she mentioned her stylists name for that shoot, I stalked the stylist but there was no mention of where they’d gotten the said earrings so I went back to the drawing board and re-strategized! I went back on instagram and somehow found an image of a Kenyan model wearing the earrings again (the torture!!)… and I somehow got wind of a store that stocks the brass bar earrings went in but they only had a danglier version and they did not know when they’d restock or where else I could get a pair (#TotsCrushed).

Also, can you believe my soon to be six year old Zizwhizz took this ↑↑ ↑↑ photo of me that was used for the feature!!! I will try not to be anal when she grabs my camera…it cost me an arm and a leg but can I really place a value on nurturing her love for photography?? Is it worth my 35mm lens?!

Fast forward to the FAFA Market event that I mentioned in last weeks 4 things I’m loving post and I’m browsing through artisans displays and what do I see right infront of me?! MY BRASS T_BAR EARRINGS ↓↓ ↓↓!!! (#ManifestationWorks #IRebukeManifestationNaySayers!… and people who litter…. oh and people who have no respect for personal space – we are queuing & I’m ahead of you, you bumping into me will not fast-track clearing of the que so please stop literally breathing down my back… I rebuke thee!) I met Evlyn, the designer at that FAFA Market and she was a darling in every sense of the word, we became fast friends & I got to wear my Brass T-Bar earring to my wedding ↓↓ ↓↓- WIN!

These ↑↑ ↑↑ bar earring are still a favourite!

⊱ཞ🖤 Family time  ཞ⊰

4 things I love 26th June 2018-5

I am an extroverted introvert… a people person loner… Contradictory much?! I love spending time with my close friends but I’m more than happy in my own company… so much so that If I’m not careful I sometimes retreat into a miasmic cocoon which isn’t always the best, especially if you are going through a rough patch or just not liking yourself at that moment. So yes I also have times when I feel depressed and as though I’m just not doing anything worth anyones time and you know what snaps me out of it…  time doing what I love and time with family and friends. Every time I spend time with my close friends I always feel revitalised, I can laugh myself silly… (I have a willing audience for my VERY FUNNY jokes… I wonder why I’m often the only one laughing though… maybe I should hold off on the country wide one woman stand-up comedy tour!).

4 things I love 26th June 2018-3

This weekend I had my sister Shax and my niece over, and on Sunday we spent the day at our other sisters house … her name is Nelly (the gorgeous one fussing over the girls) and she is all sorts of awesome! I mean I think I lucked out on the sisters in law lottery because all of them are like unicorns and glitters! Nellys fried pork and fried goat will knock your bonnet off your hair! I am arm-twisting her to share the recipe here on the blog, so I’m looking forward to that. Anyway because Shax is Muslim, this time round Nelly made fried goat ↓↓ ↓↓… and chicken gravy ↓↓ ↓↓ that I cannot even begin to describe… and matumbo (tripes). I cannot remember anything else after this because I served… inhaled the food and passed out into a satiated comma, only I was still awake!

4 things I love 26th June 2018-6

If you’ve seen the fatty piece of goat meat ↓↓ ↓↓ and are pre-judging me, then Gerr ourra here! I don’t need that kind of negativity in my life! (#PaulaDeeningIt!), I will take the gamble between a clogged artery sometime in the future and the instant gratification of popping that baby in my mouth!4 things I love 26th June 2018-4

⊱ཞ🖤 Thrifting  ཞ⊰

I LOOOOVE THRIFTING! If the thrifted rugs on Design Hadithi did not give it away then I dunno! I am a reformed thriftaholic of sorts! My first thrifting soulmate was my long time friend who also happens to run a sub-zero cool clothing line called Wanga Mathenge and we were always at a thrifting hotspot in Nairobi called Toi Market. We’d always run into these two old ladies making their rounds rifling through piles of clothing and we’d always joke that that would be us one day!!!

4 things I love 26th June 2018-7

Fast foward to the present day and I found another thrifting pal my sister Nelly and after our lunch ↑↑ ↑↑, she served us tea and brought out these darling silver tea spoons that we’d thrifted together and I still think they’re as stunning as the first time I saw them after she’d been riffling through teaspoons for the better part of ten minutes!

Thank you for joining me for another 4 things I’m loving post!
